A new ELINT/ESM payload designed specifically for UAVs was
unveiled by Rafael at the Farnborough International 2002 air show. The
system designated "Top Scan" is based on an advanced airborne direction
finding and localization system. Utilizing a compact dual-axis
interferometer for direction finding (DF) and localization sensors, which
can be installed in the nose of the aerial vehicle, Top Scan is also
integrated with a miniature low-weight receiver and processor, which can be
located in the avionics compartments of the UAV. The system provides
collection, detection and measurement of surface emitters, for
identification and high resolution localization of potential targets, in a
dense emitter environment, even in the presence of multi-path and
interference. Such emitters are commonly associated with command, control
and direction radars for missiles and other air defense systems.
