In an effort to expand its domestic supplier base, India’s Ministry of Defense is planning to open the tender for medium transport aircraft beyond the government owned HAL. Last week India's Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) approved US$2.6 billion (12,000 crore) for a global tender for 56 transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force, replacing the obsolete fleet of HS748M Avro planes.
Five months after announcing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in October 2011 the Indian Mahindra & Mahindra group and U.S. radar manufacturer Telephonics Corporation are launching a Joint Venture company in India, aimed to provide radar and surveillance systems to the Indian Ministry of Defense and civil sector.
Through the years India has established an impressive infrastructure of aerospace and defense research, development and manufacturing base, yet – except of strategic programs, for which India could depend only on itself, the defense sector failed to provide modern, effective military hardware that would par with the systems and technologies the Indian military deserve.
