Franco-German Alliance – First Step on a 20-Year MGCS Development
Germany and France began to harmonize requirements and concepts, with the intention to formalize joint system architecture for their future main battle tank, currently known as the 'Main Ground Combat System' (MGCS). This future combat system is expected to succeed the Bundeswehr’s Leopard 2 and the French Army’s Leclerc beginning in 2035.
France to Upgrade SAMP/T Extended Range Air Defense System
The French Ministry of Defence has launched a modernization program for the country's SAMP/T ground based air defense system. The Aster Block 1 NT (New Technology) programme will cover the modernization of the Aster 30 interceptor and associated SAMP/T air defense system that will evolve with missile defense capabilities.
Germany to Replace its Patriots SAMs with MEADS
The German Federal Ministry of Defence has chosen the Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS) as the basis for Taktisches Luftverteidigungssystem (TLVS), a next-generation network-based tactical air- and missile-defense system. It will replace the Patriot air defense systems initially fielded in the 1980s.
NATO establishes a fleet of multirole tanker transport fleet
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is establishing a multinational fleet of Multinational, Multi Role Tanker Transport Fleet (MMF), the acquisition of the fleet will be lead by the Netherlands. The decision followed the principal approval of ten European countries which signed the letter of intent to jointly purchase and operate the tanker fleet on November 2012.
Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Nexter Systems plan alliance
German armored vehicle manufacturer Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and French government owned defense company Nexter Systems announced a planned merger under which the two companies plan to establish a strong Franco-German defense technology group.
Italian Tornados Prepared for New Weapons
Panavia, the European consortium responsible for the multinational Tornado program has been awarded a contract introducing the AGM-88E (AARGM) and GBU-39 (small Diameter Bomb) weapons to the Tornado Strike Fighter platform, addressing the Italian Air Force long term upgrading plan.
