A modernized Tu-22M3M will soon begin flight testing. The modernization will deal with the obsolescence of the outdated avionics on the Tu-22M, bringing it to the same level as the modernized Tu-160. Further upgrades could also include the installation of missile pylons that would carry four Dagger hypersonic missiles.

According to unofficial news sources in China, Beijing may have rekindled its interest in acquiring Tu-22M3 long range supersonic bombers from Russia (NATO code name Backfire C). There has been no confirmation from Moscow or Beijing about such a deal being negotiated.
