The Army Wants its Cannons to Reach 1,000 km
The US Army has developed a self-propelled variant of the XM-907 155mm 58 Caliber cannon. an M-109A8 variant based on this enhanced design is expected to be fielded by 2023 and provide the US Army with cannon artillery firepower that could reach targets 70 km with high precision. Eventually, the Army hopes that with enhanced ammunition those guns could reach targets at 100 km.
US Army to Deploy Safer, Extended Range Rocket-Assisted Artillery Round
The Army is restarting production of Rocket Assisted Projectiles (RAP) for 155mm artillery cannons, introducing a new, redesigned RAP that will extend 155mm 39 caliber gun range to more than 24 miles (40km).
Extended Range Modifications Could Double the Range of Current Howitzers
Picatinny Arsenal engineers have been working to create a longer, newly modified M777A2 howitzer that has the potential to double the range of current M777 artillery systems. Charged with developing technology to extend the range of all 155mm artillery, the Extended Range Cannon Artillery (ERCA) project is funded by science and technology office at the US Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC).
